Problem

Hail can mean a new roof before the house leaks

Bruises, cracked shingles, and missing granules do not always open a hole the same afternoon. The house can stay dry for months while the roof’s remaining life drops. In Kansas and Missouri that is often when we write a replacement estimate—not when the ceiling finally stains.

In short

Hail can mean a new roof before the house leaks

Hail can use up remaining life before the first drip. No indoor stain does not mean the roof is fine. An inspection dates the bruises and granules so you can decide whether to replace, repair, or wait.

Signs we look for

  • Dented vents, flue caps, or gutters
  • Granule piles in downspouts after a storm
  • Bruises or cracks on shingles when viewed from a safe ladder or after a contractor inspection
  • Spalled siding or marked HVAC fins on the same elevation

Why it happens

Hail hits the surface. The underlayment and deck can still shed water until the cracked shingle weathers. South-central Kansas sees this often. St. Louis and the Twin Cities see it after spring storms. Charlotte thunderstorms produce it less often, but wind-driven hail still happens.

What we do next

We write down the hail we can see and give you a replacement estimate when most of the roof was hit, or a repair when it was not. We do not tell you the claim will be paid. The insurance company reads the policy. Stay off the roof after a storm.

What not to do

Do not wait for a drip to “prove” hail. Also do not assume every neighbor’s new roof means yours is finished. Each roof is inspected on its own.

People also ask

If there is no leak, why inspect?

Because hail can use up remaining life before the first drip. An inspection creates a dated record so you can decide whether to replace, repair, or wait. Coverage is still the insurance company’s decision.
